Best Practices For Planting Roses
For fragrance and colour during the summer months, roses are a must have in the garden!
If you are planting your roses (either in the ground or in a pot), follow these steps to give them the best start.
Prepare: dig a hole twice the depth and diameter of your rose’s root ball and half fill the planting hole with compost, or half fill your container with compost. We recommend using Westland ‘Tree & Shrub’ compost.
Add Mycorrhizal Fungi: sprinkle this directly onto the rose’s root system for better nutrient absorption.
Firm & Water: place the plant, fill all remaining gaps with the compost, firm the soil down and water thoroughly.
Maintenance: do not add fertilizer pellets directly to the planting hole, add them to the surface a few weeks later.
Choosing The Right Rose For Your Garden
‘Patio Roses’ are very easy to grow, low maintenance and are ideal for smaller gardens, balconies, patio pots and containers.
‘Bush Roses’ are great for growing in beds, borders and large pots.
‘Climbing Roses’ bring height to the garden and are ideal for covering walls and fences, or growing over pergolas and arches.
‘Climbing Patio Roses’ are a more compact variety of climbing rose, perfect for patio pots and containers.
‘Flower Carpet Roses’ act as ground cover and can quickly cover a bare area. They also work well in large patio pots.
